What Happened?

Shares of chip designer Allegro MicroSystems (NASDAQ:ALGM) jumped 6.2% in the afternoon session after UBS maintained its "Buy" rating on the company's stock, even while lowering its price target. The firm adjusted its price target for Allegro MicroSystems to $38 from $42. Despite this reduction, the maintained "Buy" rating signaled continued confidence in the stock's future potential. UBS highlighted Allegro's proactive management of shipments and its diverse geographic exposure as key factors for growth. The market's positive reaction indicated that investors focused more on the endorsement of the "Buy" rating than on the lowered price expectation.

The shares closed the day at $30.49, up 4.9% from previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Allegro MicroSystems’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 31 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 7 days ago when the stock gained 5.9% on the news that investor fears eased as President Trump softened his tone regarding trade relations with China. Following a sharp selloff late last week fueled by threats of an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods, the president's more conciliatory weekend message that "it will all be fine" sparked a broad market rally. The semiconductor sector, which is particularly sensitive to international trade policies due to its global supply chains, was among the biggest beneficiaries of the improved sentiment. Chipmakers had posted significant declines during the previous week amid escalating tariff concerns. The reversal in tone helped these stocks recover a substantial portion of their recent losses as investors bought back into the sector, relieved that trade tensions might not escalate further.

Allegro MicroSystems is up 33.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $30.49 per share, it is still trading 18.7% below its 52-week high of $37.51 from July 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Allegro MicroSystems’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,723.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. While Nvidia and AMD are trading close to all-time highs, we prefer a lesser-known (but still profitable) semiconductor stock benefiting from the rise of AI.
